Abstract
The presentation covers a few topics that represent some of our recent publications.
The unsteady aerodynamics discussed here is pertaining to bio-inspired flapping wings that have brought a lot of interests because of their significant performance advantages in micro-aerial vehicles (MAVs) and micro-underwater vehicles. In this presentation, an improved direct-forcing method is introduced that suits the computational needs for studying moving and/or morphing objects in fluid flow. Applications of this method to reveal physical insights with moving and morphing objects are presented.
Time-domain simulation of acoustic propagation in complex ambient conditions and geometries is another example. Acoustic signals are affected by complex ambient conditions such as ground effects, turbulence, refraction by wind and temperature gradients, and diffraction over buildings and hills. The major advantage of the time-domain technique is its ability to accommodate a wide variety of physical phenomena mentioned above. In addition, the behavior of sound propagation at the interface of different media can be included. We have employed computational schemes along with the immersed-boundary methods for this problem. The results of the simulation have been checked with many different sets of available data from different sources including literature data, measurement data, and analytical solutions.
